"Wooten's southern family of the Martindales can sit on a family heirloom mantle along side some of the greats (Glass Menagerie's Wingfields, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof's Pollitts, Frankie Addams from The Member of the Wedding, or the Wingos from The Prince of Tides), yet still maintain a uniqueness of the author's voice that vividly allows us to 'know' these people." - Gregory Allen, Author, Playwright

When Lex Martindale, a New York City writer, goes home to celebrate his birthday and say goodbye to his dying father, he struggles with whether or not to share with his eccentric Southern family news of his own life-threatening situation.

As we travel through seventy years of the Martindales' rich and colorful history, unearthing forbidden loves, shattered hopes and tenacious dreams, we realize that this reunion is a volatile turning point in all of their lives.

But as anger, resentments and jealousies erupt to the surface, it's their laughter and irreverent sense of humor that prevails allowing for a quiet healing in this bittersweet, moving portrait of the all-American family.

"A delicious surprise! Birthday Pie is a clever, smartly written tale that once again proves how great a storyteller Arthur Wooten actually is. A tasty treat from beginning to end." - Greg Archer, The Huffington Post

Birthday Pie A Novel eBook Arthur Wooten

I find it hard to believe Arthur Wooten is not a southerner. He is spot on with the Gothic weirdness of family histories in the south. But, it may be that all families everywhere have their weird aspects as well.

Each character in this book (and there are many) has a unique and realistic personality. The characters blend together to create a family that is totally believable. And, considering that two of the family members in the book have cancer, the tone is lighthearted throughout. When there are reflective moments, they are balanced with a splash of humor that fits the character and the situation. Actually, I can't remember the last time I read a book as laugh out loud funny as this one proved to be. The story unfolds naturally. As the story unfolds, we are given back stories for each character. These stories are funny, tragic and help the reader to understand why each character acts in the way he or she does. Even those family members that are the most annoying prove to be likeable in some way.

Mr. Wooten is a talented writer. This is the second book I've read by him. I plan on reading more. I highly recommend this book. It is funny, thoughtful and well worth the money and the time it takes to read it.

Birthday Pie A Novel eBook Arthur Wooten Reviews

Modern day "Steel Magnolias". As you read the book, you can truly "see" the characters. Reads like a screenplay; I am so hopeful that this will be made into a movie! If it's not already optioned, hell, I'd like to EP. Hi-lar-i-ous.
Arthur Wooten's 'Birthday Pie' is the novel we all wish we could write. It is at once funny and painful, with both snort out loud moments and cry quietly so no one notices moments.

It gives us wonderful characters that are gorgeously flawed. Such as the handsome lead with his penchant for peeping or the 'therapist' with a past. Whoever you meet, they are all dysfunctional, from minor kinks and issues through peccadilloes and eccentricities and on to outright diagnosable conditions.

But within all that the author shows us the beauty of a family that does function, despite the dysfunctional nature of all it's members.

So if you want to experience the joy of reading the artistry that is Arthur Wooten's writing, or you just want to feel better about your own family, indulge in a piece of 'Birthday Pie'.
Arthur Wooten's Birthday Pie is a fun read looking at dysfunctional family dynamics. The cast of colorful characters take the reader from laughing one minute to being very moved the next. Lex Martindale and four generations of his family return home to Ragland, North Carolina for his birthday celebration and that's when the fun begins. We travel through time to uncover some very dark secrets some family members had kept locked in their closet for years, and even had hoped to take to their grave.
Right from the beginning, this story grabs you and gives a glimpse of life in the Martindale immediate and extended families. The author truly gives us wonderful characters to love, laugh with, and feel as though we are part of the family. Then, there are those members that are true pains, just as in a real family. He wraps the story with some illnesses and events that keep us turning the pages, laughing and crying. Hilarious in places! I want to see the play!
Birthday Pie sounded like a fun, quick read.
Instead it was confusing, rushed and not that interesting.
The characters weren't clearly defined. I had trouble getting a clear picture of any of them and had trouble remembering who was who.
Each chapter seemed to me to be an opening of a different act, and I kept waiting for the words, "Act 2. Scene 2', Fade left, or something similar, to appear.
Nothing seemed to be resolved by the end of the novel. The plot seemed as sticky as the messy pie itself.
There is something to be said for novelizing a play where characters have been so deftly crafted. Evidently, that is what Arthur Wooten has done with Birthday Pie that had its start on the stage. Wooten's southern family of the Martindales can sit on a family heirloom mantle along side some of the greats (Glass Menagerie's Wingfields, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof's Pollitts, Frankie Addams from The Member of the Wedding, or the Wingos from The Prince of Tides), yet still maintain a uniqueness of the author's voice that vividly allows us to 'know' these people. For me it was a completely different genre from his previous works & I for one applaud an author who ventures into different worlds. In the course of a birthday visit and a chance to say goodbyes, Wooten transports the reader through generations of this family while making us fall for each of them through pain and humor combined. An internet search of interviews can show how this author from Massachusetts drew upon his own father's southern roots to tell such a wonderful tale. This reader is glad that he did.
They were not the best of times, they were the most trying times; but Arthur Wooten begins his moving story hilariously. Lex Martindale returns to his birthplace to not only have his birthday celebrated, but it's also a family reunion as his dad is dying at home. His mother seems to be the power-player, but she's very eccentric as well as his brother and two sisters. Oh, also add his seven-year old niece who has a wild imagination. No two family members are alike and you'll laugh at all their antics and then you also discover their misfortunes. One character stands out to be the most wise blind Grandma Anastasia Battles. She seems to connect with each member of the family, even knowing the serious illness that plagues Lex. This story is a look at their past lives, mistakes, and present day lives told with such humor it literally makes you laugh out loud. But then, there are the serious issues told with grace and style. Arthur Wooten is an excellent author of many magnetic stories; this, again, is a stellar novel.
